Eligibility

  • Must have directed a minimum of two short films. Short films must be under 60 minutes in length and must not be TV, music video, commercial or for-hire productions. Short films can be fiction, experimental, animation or documentary

  • Only shorts filmmakers from Southeast Asia who have not worked on their 1st feature length script will be eligible for selection. This includes projects that have been submitted to international project markets and labs worldwide

  • Nationals of the following countries are eligible for SEAFIC Seed Lab participation: Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Permanent residents are not eligible. Verification of passport will be required as proof of nationality

  • Minimum English fluency is required to attend the lab

  • At least one previous short *must* have been previously selected in one of these reputable international film festivals:

    • Sundance Film Festival

    • International Film Festival Rotterdam

    • Berlin International Film Festival, including Berlin Critics’ Week

    • Hong Kong International Film Festival

    • Tribeca Film Festival

    • New Directors/New Films at MoMA

    • Cannes Film Festival, including Official Selection, Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes Critics’ Week and Cannes ACID. Cannes Short Film Corner will not be considered as eligible

    • Locarno Film Festival

    • Venice Film Festival, including Official Selection, Venice Days and Venice Critics’ Week

    • Toronto International Film Festival

    • San Sebastián International Film Festival

    • Busan International Film Festival

    • New York Film Festival

    • Tokyo International Film Festival

    • Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival

    • Singapore International Film Festival

    • Vancouver International Film Festival

    • Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival

    • ifva at Hong Kong Arts Centre

    • Palm Springs International ShortFest

  • Previous shorts as well as a completed application form and application materials must be submitted to SEAFIC to qualify

  • Applicants must disclose information regarding their COVID-19 vaccination history/plan as participants must be fully vaccinated in order to satisfy Thai immigration requirements to enter Phuket

  • Selected participants must agree to attend all two sessions within the three-month period. SEAFIC will determine and notify participants in the event that the 2nd session is unable to be conducted in-person and must be done online

  • SEAFIC has the right of final decision on all submission eligibility


SEAFIC Statement Of Commitment

  • SEAFIC aims to advance, strengthen, and refine the quality of feature-length scripts and projects by talented filmmakers from the Southeast Asian region. SEAFIC Seed Lab expands on this mission by aiding shorts filmmakers in exploring their directorial voices prior to developing their first feature scripts

  • There is no cost to apply to SEAFIC Seed Lab

  • The 1st session of SEAFIC Seed Lab shall be conducted online. The 2nd session aims to be an in-person session held in Phuket (COVID-19-willing). Flights and accommodation costs to participate in the 2nd session shall be covered by SEAFIC, unless participant is flying in from outside of Southeast Asia

  • SEAFIC holds the safety and well-being of all involved as its top priority. To achieve this, SEAFIC requires all participants to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination history or plan upon application

  • SEAFIC will determine and notify participants in the event that the 2nd session is unable to be conducted in-person and must be done on-line due to Thai pandemic restrictions

  • SEAFIC shall publicize its activities and that of its participants with leading international project markets, labs and festivals throughout the world

  • SEAFIC shall retain no rights to the projects developed at its lab. However, participants shall award proper credit to SEAFIC and its mentors, as further stipulated once the participants are confirmed
