MEN WHO SAVE THE WORLD (Lelaki Harapan Dunia)
Dir: Liew Seng Tat, 2014
Festivals: Locarno, Toronto, Busan
Liew Seng Tat's 2nd film is a caustic, allegorical comedy that skewers fundamentalism, xenophobia and superstitions. In rural Malaysia, Pak Awang tries to convince other villagers to help him carry an abandoned house into the village for his betrothed daughter. But when a runaway African immigrant is spotted, the villagers mistakenly believe that a spirit is on the loose. Thus begins a series wild mishaps that lead the villages to try to ‘protect’ themselves from so-called ‘danger’.
MEN WHO SAVE THE WORLD has been chosen as the opening screening for the 1st edition of SEAFIC Open House. The film, a Malaysia/Germany/Netherlands/France coproduction, was developed at both Sundance Institute and TorinoFilmLab. Both director Liew Seng Tat and producer Sharon Gan shall be on hands after the free screening to talk about the development and financing of their film.
